Pre/Postnatal Yoga with Sarah Collier

Starting on September 17th , Thursdays at 11:00 am

This will be a one hour class for moms-to-be and moms with their babies up to 12 months.

Attire: Comfortable, cool and easy to move in. Please bring blankets for babies. Yoga mats provided but students welcome to bring their own.

Prenatal yoga is a great way to relieve the aches and pains of pregnancy, as well as to prepare the body and mind for labor. Through safe modifications of yoga postures and breathing techniques we will strengthen, support and bring ease to the body as it grows and changes throughout pregnancy. There is no ‘right’ time to begin prenatal yoga. Some practitioners work with their doctors to determine an appropriate time, others believe that they will ‘feel’ when the time is right.

Postnatal yoga gives parents of new babies the opportunity to practice in a supportive community. Classes address the physical discomforts and energy challenges that new parents face. Babies up to 12 months (or too mobile to supervise) are welcome, however practitioners may also come alone.

Determining the return to physical activity is a personal decision and should be considered carefully. Each practitioner should always follow the advice of their health care provider and listen to their own bodies.

Both prenatal and postnatal students will benefit from postures that strengthen the legs and pelvic floor, as well as postures that gently strengthen the core. Flexibility is also addressed through gentle openers of the hips and heart. Gentle pranayama (breath work) is used to quiet the body and mind and bring focus inward.
